Overview

Active Lifestyles

We provide inclusive opportunities for everyone to get active and participate in physical activity regardless of whether you are starting, recovering from injury, living with a long-term health condition or an older adult.

The Active Lifestyles programme of classes and activities runs at venues across the city. From pool-based activities to walking groups, seated exercise and higher impact classes, there is something for everyone, whatever your interest or ability. Please click on the ‘Classes’ tab above to view our current timetable. You can find our current safety protocols here.

We offer Active Lifestyles swimming sessions in a relaxed and calm environment, suitable for all adults. The sessions take place at Get active @ Northfield and Tullos Swimming Pool – availability can be found on our timetables here.

Eligibility and Referrals

The Active Lifestyles Referral Programme offers specialist classes across the city, specifically designed for individuals living with a range of long-term health conditions. Any health professional can refer into our programme using the referral form, otherwise, you can self-refer.

Class Descriptions

Classes are grouped into three intensity levels, with a useful guide to help you find the right opportunity for you.

Get active for Less

We are committed to breaking down barriers and ensuring our memberships are inclusive and affordable.

Our ‘Get active for Less’ scheme offers discounted access to our Fitness membership for those who meet the eligibility criteria.

We are committed to making sport and physical activity accessible to all, because everyone deserves the opportunity to get active and most importantly, have fun!

Level 1 Classes

Level 1 Classes – Low-intensity exercise with the aim of making the activities of daily living more manageable. The sessions are often based on or behind a chair and focus on improving strength, balance and walking.

Social Walking Groups
Walk Aberdeen Social Walking Groups 1 Short, sociable and community-based walks, lasting up to an hour with opportunities suitable for everyone.  Walks are free and are led by trained volunteer walk leaders and finish with a cup of tea and chat for which there is a small charge.
Move More Walks
Move More Health Walk (R) 1 A one hour walk which departs from the same centre each week but has a variety of different routes to ensure no two weeks are the same.  Longer and shorter routes are available for participants of all fitness levels.
Group Exercise
First Steps 1 This class offers 20 minutes of strength and balance exercises followed by a short, flat walk.
Active Lifestyles Gentle Exercise 1 A gentle exercise class to music that allows participants to move and awaken all areas of the body working on fitness, balance, coordination and strength.
Active Lifestyles Seated Yoga 1 A gentler form of yoga that can be done sitting on a chair or standing while using the chair for support. The class focuses on mobility, flexibility, strength and balance.
Active Lifestyles Stable & Able (R) 1 A session for those looking to improve their strength, balance and posture.
Active Lifestyles Stable & Able Maintenance 1 A session for those looking to improve their strength, balance and posture. This session is great for people currently attending 1 Stable and Able session and encouraged to attend a second class.
Carers Stable & Able (R) 1 A session for those looking to improve their strength, balance and posture. Sessions open to people with a caring role and the person they care for.
Exercise After Stroke (R) 1 12-week progressive exercise class for participants who have had a stroke. The aim is to improve strength, function and stamina.
Move More Gentle Movement (R) 1 For those who have not been active for a while and would consider themselves to have a lower level of fitness. Class based on Qi Gong which focusses on slow and controlled movements of the body in time with breathing.  All exercises can be done seated or standing.

Level 2 Classes

Level 2 Classes – Classes designed to improve strength, balance, coordination and conditioning. These classes are more dynamic but still have balance support options if required.

Active Lifestyles Adapted Tai Chi 2 A gentle introduction to Tai Chi, incorporating slow, continuous movements that are gentle on the joints and muscles.
Active Lifestyles Pilates 2 A low impact class focussing on flexibility & muscular strength with an emphasis on postural alignment, core strength & balance.  This is a floor-based class.
Active Lifestyles Retro Rhythms 2 Upbeat but low impact exercise to music class giving a great full-body workout.
Active Lifestyles Steady Steps 2 A class aimed at improving balance, coordination, strength & cardiovascular fitness all in 60 minutes!
Active Lifestyles Technogym Movers 2 A progressive 12-week class for those new or returning to Technogym.  The class aims to improve confidence, fitness levels & above all promote enjoyable exercise.
Active Lifestyles Zumba Gold 2 Low impact, high fun & easy to follow Zumba choreography that focuses on balance, range of motion & coordination.
Move More Circuit Group (R) 2 This one-hour class is ideal for those who wish to push that bit more.  Participants move around a variety of stations working on all major muscle groups with the support of our fully qualified instructors.
Active Lifestyles Zumba Toning 2 Low impact and lots of fun, this easy to follow Zumba Choreography puts some extra emphasis on toning and sculpting to define those muscles.
Technogym 2 The class aims to improve confidence during exercise, fitness levels & overall strength of the upper and lower body.
Swimming Pool
Active Ageing Learn to Swim Lessons 2 Swimming lessons for older adults led by experienced swimming teachers.
Active Lifestyles Relaxed Swimming 2 Relaxed session offering a quiet environment, inclusive, friendly, welcoming, fun & affordable.  Safe space & adapted equipment available. Session open to all family, friends & supporters.
Active Lifestyles Swimming 2 A quiet & calm public swimming session suitable for all adults
Aqua Zumba 2 Make a splash with this low-impact, high-fun exercise class in the water with less stress on your joints this class offers all the fun of Zumba.
Dance
Active Lifestyles Line Dancing 2 Choreographed dance class teaching line dancing routines to some great music.
Active Lifestyles Fit Step 2 An energetic, upbeat dance fitness class featuring all of your favourite strictly dances. It is suitable for all ages and abilities and you don’t need a partner/ You’ll have so much fun and will get fit at the same time!
Dance & Soul 2 Dance & Soul is a fun energetic class focusing on improving balance, memory, coordination, muscle strength and confidence.

Level 3 Classes

Level 3 Classes – Full-body workouts with the aim of improving strength and conditioning. Great for people progressing through the Active Lifestyles pathway or for people with good general fitness, and who are keen to start structured exercise.

Active Lifestyles Indoor Cycling 3 Ideal for those looking to have cycle session in the spin bike studio with lively music, emphasis on lower body and your own fitness levels to challenge.
Active Lifestyles Live Well Circuits 3 Ideal for those looking to get more active, these classes are low impact and tailored to meet your needs by our experienced team of Health & Wellness Advisors who will provide support and motivation.
Active Lifestyles Live Well Gym 3 Introduces you to all aspects of exercising in a gym.  Once you’ve learned the basics you’ll be supported with a tailored programme to help you meet your own fitness goals.
Active Lifestyles Steady Steps Plus 3 A collection of your favourite exercises from the original Steady Steps class just stepped up a gear, think bigger more challenging movements with a diverse range of equipment.
Active Lifestyles Technogym Improvers 3 Technogym Improvers – A progressive tailored Technogym class aimed at those who have previous Technogym experience or progressed from a Technogym Movers class.
Active Lifestyles Zumba 3 A mix of low and high-intensity Zumba choreography that gives an interval-style, dance workout.
Active Lifestyles Movers and Shapers 3 Ideal for those looking to push a little more. This class utilises a range of equipment and offers an opportunity to develop all areas of fitness; strength, balance, flexibility and coordination.

How to book

Booking is done via MySportAberdeen or by calling or popping into the venue where the activity takes place.

MySportAberdeen is our online booking system that allows you to manage your membership and make, and cancel, bookings all in one easy-to-use application. If you need any assistance in setting up or using this system don’t hesitate to call or pop into one of our venues where our friendly staff will be happy to resolve any of your issues.

Active Lifestyles Indoor Bowls 2 A fun and social indoor bowls session
Active Lifestyles Ladies Walking Football 2 Walking football is exactly what it sounds like – a standard game of football where players walk instead of run. It is fun, friendly & can help you feel fitter & healthier. Sessions are open to beginners & experienced players alike.
Active Lifestyles Pickleball 2 Pickleball is a paddle sport (similar to a racquet sport) that combines elements of badminton, tennis & table tennis and is played indoors on a badminton court. These fun and sociable sessions are open to beginners and improvers.
Active Lifestyles Table Tennis 2 These sessions are designed for players of any standard including complete beginners or those who haven’t played for many years. There is usually a coach available to give guidance to anyone who would like to improve.
Active Lifestyles Walking Football 2 Walking football is exactly what it sounds like – a standard game of football where players walk instead of run. It is friendly and can help you feel fitter and healthier.
Active Lifestyles Walking Netball 2 Walking netball is suitable for all ages and abilities. This session is at a walking pace with adapted rules and court size. This coached session is fun, social and provides great health benefits.

Active Lifestyles Tennis 3 These coached tennis sessions are designed for players of any ability from beginners to more experienced players and those who haven’t played for many years.
Active Lifestyles Walking Football BLC 3 Walking football is an action-packed game of football – just with no running. It’s a great way to stay involved with the beautiful game! whether you’re looking to keep fit, be sociable or just want to score a couple of goals then walking football is exactly up your street.
