Snowsports are a Women’s Game
In recent years, both snowboarding and skiing have experienced a huge surge in females taking part and competing. During the winter months when it is cold and there is the possibility of snow, plus some major winter sports events taking place, it’s the perfect time to get inspired for learning to ski or snowboard.
The world of snowsports is really picking up for women – the participation rate and presence of females in the industry is increasing. There are some remarkable female role models in the snowsports game:
- Christl Cranz – Competed in the first women’s ski event at the Olympics securing gold, and throughout her career scooped a total of 13 World Championships.
- Tina Basich – A pioneer in the female snowboarding world, she was the first woman to win a Winter X Games gold and she helped to design snowboards and outerwear for women.
- Bibian Mentel-Spee – At the forefront of the campaign to get Para snowboard included in the Paralympic games, she went on to win three Paralympic titles, scooping two gold medals.
- Verena Bentele – German visually impaired Nordic skier who is regarded as one of the best Paralympic athletes to ever compete in the winter games. Twelve of her 16 Paralympic medals are gold.
- Kelly Clark – American Freestyle Snowboarder with over 70 career wins (more than any male and female athletes before her). She is a 4x Olympian and 3x medallist.
- Jenny Jones – Team GB Snowboarder who was the first Briton to win an Olympic gold on the snow and is a 3x Winter X Games gold medal winner.
Skiing and snowboarding are good for the soul. Exercising outdoors helps your body to release feel-good chemicals called endorphins – this is likely to lift your mood and make you feel happy!
Participating in snowsports can also strengthen your lower body and core muscles, as well as improve your flexibility and balance. So, what are you waiting for? It’s your chance to give it a try.
